Royal Gorge, Canon City, CO - Day 13 of Western Tour

Here’s day 13 and I know you’re getting tired of these posts so there’s only one more! I actually returned home real late last night but I’m two days behind in posts since we were off the grid for four days.

Welcome to Cañon City, Colorado! Never heard of it? Me neither. Cañon City is Home to the Royal Gorge, sculpted by the Arkansas River. We whitewater rafted down this one-of-a-kind river with @royalgorgerafting and our amazing guide, Donny, who let our boat of 5 Boy Scouts do just about every single stupid thing we can think of. “Can we jump off of that Rock?” -us “Heck yeah!” -donny

On the left side of the river is a train track that has been used to store old train cars for the past 20 years. In other areas a train carrying tourists would go by. Throughout the gorge, there is a lot of old pipes, parts of dams, and mining equipment scattered. This dates back to the late 1800s when prisoners had to build the pipes that brought Cañon city it’s water.

After rafting, we traveled to La Junta and stayed overnight at the Koshare Indian Museum, which was sponsored by a Boy Scout Troop in the 1940s to preserve the local Indian Culture through artifacts and interpretive dancing.
