Welcome to Painted Desert, Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona!
200 Million years ago this area was inhabited by a lush forest that was later covered by water. Submerged in water and buried in sediment, the wood turned into a stone-like material and became “Petrified”. Today, erosion has exposed many of these ancient trees and they can be found throughout the desert.
Thursday was Day 1 of 14 of our alternative hiking trip to Philmont after our trek was cancelled due to wildfire about a week and a half before our flight. For the next two weeks we are touring New Mexico, Arizona, and Colorado.
The views in this park were amazing. We watched the sunset at night and got up at 4:30 to watch the sun rise and famously tint the desert red. Around 3:30 AM I saw one of the most spectacular night skies which was unmatched by anything I’ve ever seen in the Atlanta area.
