Georgia Tech alum and astrophysics major get engaged during eclipse

Atlanta News First - Jason Braverman

The stars aligned to give a Georgia Tech alum and his girlfriend the moment of a lifetime during the recent solar eclipse. Nathaniel Greve graduated from Georgia Tech in 2023 with a degree in computer science. He met his girlfriend, Corinne Hill, in 2021 when they both played alto saxes in the Georgia Tech marching band.

After being unable to experience totality in 2017, Greve said the pair made plans to go to Wapakoneta, Ohio, for 2024′s eclipse. Greve said he got the idea to propose to Hill “a little over a year ago.” He said Hill’s “cheery disposition and boundless caring and kindness was how I knew she was the one.” Greve said he had extended family near Wapakoneta. The city is known as the hometown of Neil Armstrong, the first man to walk on the moon, and has a museum dedicated to his life.

Hill is currently majoring in astrophysics at Georgia Tech and “loves astronomy,” according to Greve. Hill’s friends in Georgia Tech’s astronomy club went to the Ozarks to experience the eclipse, but Hill agreed to go to Ohio instead.

Greve said the trip didn’t full come together until about a week before the eclipse, but that preparations weren’t “all that difficult or carefully calculated.” He said, “The whole thing wouldn’t have been possible without my sister, who ensured that I had all the preparations in order.” Greve’s sister also took photos of the proposal. He used a ring box with a small light in it, and according to him, she said “absolutely.” Greve’s only worry was that they’d miss the eclipse because Hill “buried her head into my shoulder for a hug.”

A stellar engagement: Georgia couple gets engaged during solar eclipse

11Alive - Jessica Moore

Neil Armstrong's hometown turned out to be the perfect setting for an out-of-this-world engagement for Nathaniel Greve and Corinne Hill. A Georgia couple is sharing the heartwarming story of their engagement during Monday's solar eclipse  – and the proposal was stellar.

Nathaniel Greve and Corinne Hill met while playing in the marching band at Georgia Tech in 2021. The college sweethearts started dating shortly after.

"Her cheery disposition and boundless caring and kindness were how I knew she was the one," Greve recalled. Greve knew he wanted to take his relationship and proposal to new heights. "A little over a year ago, I thought it would be a neat opportunity to propose to Corinne, who loves astronomy," Greve said.

For Monday's celestial event, the couple decided to visit Greve's family in Wapakoneta, Ohio, the hometown of Neil Armstrong. It turned out to be the perfect setting for an out-of-this-world proposal to an astronomy aficionado. "Even though she was suspicious that that was the underlying intent of the trip, everyone else was pleasantly surprised and a ring box from Amazon that had a small light in it made the moment and photos pretty neat," Greve recalled.

So, while Hill and their family and friends were looking at the ring in the sky around the eclipse, Greve said he knelt to the ground to present a ring of his own. "I suppose you could say that the stars would have to align in order to ensure the timing in the relationship was just right," Greve said. "When she said yes... I was afraid that we were going to miss the rest of our four-minute eclipse because she buried her head into my shoulder for a hug!"
