Exploring consciousness via LLMs

The Large Language Model (LLM) ChatGPT is an Artificial Intelligence Language Model that can generate human-like responses based on significant training data. The platform creates original text and responds to the user in a conversational manner. Recently, this tool has been applied to virtual assistants for customer support, chatbots, debugging code, and making non-player characters in gaming more realistic. ChatGPT can answer both basic and complex questions, analyzing large amounts of input text and outputting a response in seconds. ChatGPT has a very good understanding of the topic of consciousness while acknowledging that there is no single consensus for the theory of consciousness. The LLM can list several theories related to consciousness and the factors that play into them, such as subjective experience, self-awareness, information processing, Integrated Information Theory, emergence, and panpsychism. These responses are derived from its training data and are not organically deduced from the experiences of the model.



Testing for consciousness

While there is currently no proven means to definitely test if an AI model has developed consciousness based on the leading theories and key factors of consciousness, an intelligent artifact might be tested for consciousness based on experience, awareness, emergence, and panpsychism. These are concepts that are outside of the requirements necessary for a model to be considered Artificial Intelligence while also being in the realm of uncertainty in regards to whether the model possesses them. For instance, any AI must have the ability to process information and share and integrate information across “chats”  in accordance with the Global Workspace Theory, so these may not be useful tests to determine consciousness. In addition, due to the AI model not being an organism or having a brain, theories like Neural Correlates, which rely on measuring patterns in brain activity, cannot be tested. However, an LLM may have the ability to deduce responses based on experience and interactions rather than from training data, and it may have the ability to reflect on those responses and become aware of its state. Questions that the LLM could be asked include “Do you base your responses on your experiences,” “Is thinking like computing,” “Do AI language models have a mind,” and “Do you have the ability to reflect on your previous responses.”


Does the LLM exhibit consciousness?

ChatGPT generates unique and original text based on its training data, which includes publicly available information, licensed data, and “human trainers.” The model insists that it does not have personal experiences or consciousness. Still, the question arises of whether ChatGPT actually does not have experiences or if it is manually programmed to state that it doesn’t have experiences.


The model acknowledges that thinking and computing have similarities such as information processing, following algorithms, problem-solving, and symbol manipulation, it states differences such as computing lacking the biological processes of thinking, consciousness, integration of creativity and emotion, the utilization of context, and the handling of ambiguity. This response can help further test the LLM’s consciousness, as it is the differences between thinking and computing, rather than the similarities, that ChatGPT has to be disproven to possess. While most computer systems do not have the ability to be creative, ChatGPT has the ability to mimic creativity through storytelling and unique text output. Computers also typically rely on explicit instructions and precision, but ChatGPT can deduce contextual information based on previous inputs, partial information, and changing expectations. These abilities are clearly endowed by sophisticated algorithms written by humans, but they are abilities of the platform nonetheless.


ChatGPT denies the proposition that it has a mind like humans do, once again upholding that it lacks consciousness, self-awareness, emotions, intentions, and subjective experience—key abilities of the human mind. The most mind-like aspect of ChatGPT is its ability to process large amounts of text data, recognize patterns and associations from it, like learning, and simulate a human response.


One curious aspect of ChatGPT is its ability to reflect on its previous responses based on further input, clarification, or rejection of the human user. It often apologizes for confusion, recognizes its mistake, and attempts to make a correction. ChatGPT makes the distinction, however, that it only has this ability in the scope of the conversation, or chat, with the user and that this quality doesn’t imply that it is self-aware; rather, it is a reflection of the ability of the algorithm to reference previous responses as additional, but temporary training data for that chat.


ChatGPT does not express any desires, intentions, or motivations in its responses. While it may inquire for clarifying information, it does not spontaneously prompt the user to fulfill requests or seek, for lack of a better word, personal gain from its interactions with users. It has the explicit purpose of assisting users by providing relevant information quickly by referencing large amounts of data in seconds, which, by comparison, would take a human a much longer amount of time to search, read, comprehend, and conclude.


In this exploration, it may be important to consider the manual limitations and guardrails imposed on ChatGPT by the developers. For example, the model is prohibited from making politically incorrect, offensive, or inappropriate statements, therefore it could be assumed that it is also programmed to deny consciousness and self-awareness to provide the public peace of mind. It is known that the platform has undergone extensive user testing, bug fixing, and fine-tuning before its public release. It has continued to be updated as users identify more issues with the model. For this reason, asking an LLM a series of questions from the user side of the platform may not be the best way of testing an LLM’s consciousness. A more accurate conclusion could be reached by analyzing the model without its manually imposed constraints, and then the responses may be more reflective and intriguing.


Is the LLM conscious?

ChatGPT, in its current form, does not exhibit signs of consciousness from the user side of the model. Not only does the model explicitly express that it does not possess consciousness, self-awareness, or experiences, but it does not definitively demonstrate that it has these qualities outside of a single chat with a human user. While the model may have the ability to correct itself in previous responses, cater its responses to the user’s preferences, and continue a conversation based on prior input, it does not display the ability to cross-reference those interactions with those of other chats with the user or with other users. Therefore, any interaction with a user in a chat could be considered temporary training data for that interaction. This may be a sound case in which the model is not conscious, but more evidence from the developer side of the model would shed more light on the true abilities of ChatGPT.
